Public Advocacy:

How to become an advocate offline:

Educate yourself first then educate others in your personal realm. From there you may then wish to move out into your community to do advocacy outreach. There is a terrific resource online to aid you in your advocacy work and I highly recommend you check it out thoroughly as it will provide you with much insight into the issues you'll need to be familiar with. It's called The Kit - a guide to the advocacy we choose to do and it's very, very good information.

How to become an advocate online:

Becoming an advocate is easier to do than you might think as there are numerous organizations online who share a keen interest in mental health issues in general. Your biggest worry will be in keeping the reins on your enthusiasm so that you don't spread your efforts too thin. It is better to find one or two groups to be involved in than to have your energies (no matter how well-intended) scattered and thus become ineffectual.

Participating in online discussion groups that promote various mental health issues is an easy and effective way to stay abreast of current hot topics in mental health issues. Your words and thoughts connect with other like-minded folks and create a flexible network where real change takes place. You may not think you are doing much, but by merely adding your voice, and then disseminating information to both your online and your offline friends and family, you lift the stigma associated with a mental illness and give strength to the movement.

There are so many online forums dedicated to raising awareness and often these forums are connected with real life organizations, but just as often, they aren't. Listed below are some of the online places you can easily join so you too will have a voice in what your future (or your loved one's future) will be like.
