Potentiality

Every mood has at least one potential and that is the changeability inherent to the disorder, but changeability alone isn't what we really worry about, no, it's the change into a kind of sub-state of the current mood. It's the mixture of both depressive and manic attributes that makes for the potentiality of a mixed state. Because the person in such a mood is struggling with both an up and a down mix at the same time they can be particularly volatile. They may lash out verbally or physically and often they self-harm…trying to physically excise the pain and loathing they feel. The pain is so soul-searing and devastating that there seems only one outlet or surcease from this pain and that is why suicide sometimes seems to be the most peaceful, reasonable option available.

A person in a mixed state is not easy to help. Whatever you, who love a person in this state, try to do is likely to backfire, but the one thing you truly need to know is that you simply MUST NOT leave this person alone. If you do, despite the temptation because they are likely to strike out at you, they may not live to see another day so please stay with them and ride it through. The mood will change, but it is so dangerous that I cannot urge you enough to stay with the person and be there even if you remain nothing more than a verbal sounding board to keep them in touch with reality. Read on for an introduction to the various components of this mood state.
